Methanol Institute Statement on Worldwide Fuel Charter

MI CEO Responds to Release of the 6th Edition WWFC Which Now Accepts the Blending of Methanol in Gasoline Where Specified by Applicable Standards

The continued perpetuation of biased misstatements contained in the WWFC about methanol are unfortunate.”

— Gregory Dolan, CEO, Methanol Institute

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, October 31, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Statement by Gregory Dolan, CEO, Methanol Institute

“The 6th edition of the Worldwide Fuel Charter (WWFC) was released this week offering the automakers’ recommendations for a harmonized global specification for gasoline. Previous editions of the Worldwide Fuel Charter suggested that methanol should not be permitted in gasoline. In response to detailed comments submitted by the Methanol Institute and other stakeholders, the 6th Edition WWFC now finds that methanol is acceptable for blending in gasoline where “specified by applicable standards,” using the example of the European Union’s allowance of up to 3% methanol by volume in gasoline under standard EN228.

“While we welcome the global automaker’s recognition that the blending of methanol in gasoline is allowed in countries around the world, the continued perpetuation of biased misstatements contained in the WWFC about methanol are unfortunate. In a section of the WWFC on ‘Oxygenates,’ the document raises concerns about the blending of methanol in gasoline based entirely on unpublished ‘non-confidential images/data used with Toyota’s permission.’ Contrary to the limited technical data presented in the WWFC, the Methanol Institute’s comments highlighted over 40 years of successful commercial experience with methanol/gasoline fuel blends.

“Our comments addressed technical and commercial concerns regarding materials compatibility, driveability, emissions, and fuel stability. Methanol’s physical properties – high octane, high heat of vaporization, high flame speed, and reduced engine knock – enhance gasoline and enable technologies for greater engine efficiency. Blending methanol into gasoline also reduces harmful vehicle exhaust emissions.

“While one goal of the WWFC is to specify a gasoline with lower carbon intensity, the document fails to note that methanol is being produced today from a wide range of conventional and renewable feedstocks. Methanol can be a future proof, low-carbon and high-octane gasoline blendstock for the global fleet of cars.”

About the Worldwide Fuel Charter: The WWFC is published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), US Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, US Engine Manufacturers Association, and Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association to “promote harmonized fuel quality worldwide.” In April, ACEA announced that the Worldwide Fuel Charter Committee was seeking comments on the proposed 6th edition of the Worldwide Fuel Charter.

About the Methanol Institute: As the trade association for the global methanol industry, the Methanol Institute (MI) represents world’s leading methanol producers, distributors and technology companies from its offices in Singapore, Washington, Brussels and Beijing. For the past 30 years, MI has worked to ensure the safe handling of methanol across the distribution chain, promote the growth of methanol as an essential chemical commodity and energy resource, and influence global regulatory and public policy initiatives that impact the methanol industry. Thanksgiving week, known as flotilla week in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, launches the coastal Carolina holiday season with two long-running traditions..

WILMINGTON/WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA, USA, October 31, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Thanksgiving week, known as flotilla week in Wrightsville Beach, launches the coastal Carolina holiday season with two long-running traditions, the 36th annual North Carolina Holiday Flotilla, and Airlie Gardens’ 15th annual Enchanted Airlie.

A highlight of the weekend, Saturday night’s flotilla unveils a procession of beautifully decorated yachts and watercraft, each glittering with thousands of lights, slowly motoring past an estimated crowd of 50,000 revelers.
Immediately following the parade, a stunning and captivating 20-minute, 4,000-round fireworks display illuminates the night sky and showers the waterway with sound and color.

The North Carolina Holiday Flotilla weekend is filled with family options, including Friday’s tree lighting ceremony with a visit from Santa, and the evening’s Flotilla Launch Party featuring the Jack Jack 180 dance band.

Saturday’s schedule includes the well-known Festival in the Park with nearly 100 pop-ups featuring arts, crafts, treats, and local merchants. Activities onsite offer bouncy houses for the children, slides, climbing walls, the Shriner’s Arab Choo Choo, live music, and The Antique, Classic, and Special Interest Car Show.

Early arrivals during Flotilla week begin the celebration Thanksgiving Day with a seafood-centric feast at host hotel Blockade Runner Beach Resort. Harbor Island tours depart the resort’s docks 3-times per day with Cape Fear Naturalist, Captain Joe Abbate. Prominently located on the flotilla parade route, Blockade Runner is within easy walking distance of all activities on the island.

Airlie Gardens’ Enchanted Airlie is open 19 evenings this year, including Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29 and 30 during flotilla week, and every night Dec. 6 thru 22. There are two event times per night, 5-7 PM, and 7-9 PM. Enchanted Airlie tickets are available on the Airlie Gardens website, or Blockade Runner guests may contact the hotel to make arrangements.

“We are very excited to be celebrating our 15th year for Enchanted Airlie,” said Janine Powell of Airlie Gardens. “Each year, we sell out faster and faster, and this year we’re approaching the half-million mark for cumulative attendance.”

Created by the Airlie Gardens Foundation, Enchanted Airlie brings to life 35-acres of night-time forest with more than one million sparkling lights, holiday displays, and seasonal music. The walking trails offer an indoor visit with Santa, plus food and beverage vendors with hot chocolate, coffee, popcorn, cookies, unique local brews, and more.

“Enchanted Airlie has gained national and international prominence, attracting visitors from across the country and many nations,” said Powell. “Visitors should make a plan. We will sell out all dates and times.”

Proceeds from Enchanted Airlie benefit the preservation and improvement of New Hanover County’s historic Airlie Gardens.

Hotel Mama Cuchara: First Green Globe Property in Ecuador

Hotel Mama Cuchara

Green Globe Certification was recently awarded to the Hotel Mama Cuchara with the hotel receiving a magnificent compliance score of 89%.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, October 31, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ —
Hotel Mama Cuchara is situated in the Historic Center of Quito, the best-preserved and least altered historic center of UNESCO’s world heritage sites in Latin America. The hotel is within walking distance from the Plaza Santo Domingo, La Ronda, and many of the city’s most popular old sites.

Green Globe Certification was recently awarded to the Hotel Mama Cuchara with the hotel receiving a magnificent compliance score of 89%.
One of the most notable practices at the property is the meticulous restoration of a Spanish-colonial house built in the 1860s. The recognized UNESCO World Heritage building in the old downtown area has been transformed into a modern boutique hotel that first opened its doors in 2017. With sustainability at the forefront of renovations, natural lighting has been incorporated along with water and energy saving measures whilst conserving the original infrastructure and history behind the house. Construction materials from the original building were also reused where possible to minimize waste from restoration works.

As a family owned and operated property, Hotel Mama Cuchara shares a philosophy and vision with fellow Art Hotels that focuses on management working closely with staff members, neighbors, guests and people in the wider community. Art and music are other key areas that are valued and promoted to preserve indigenous culture in Ecuador. Vibrant, creative local art adorns walls and areas within the property while local musicians performing songs are also part of daily life here. Guests may be surprised to discover staff members double as musicians or artists displaying their hidden talents. Through these interactions, guests are seamlessly immersed in the traditional culture of the region. In addition, unique culinary dishes highlight Ecuadorian products and gastronomy.

In line with equal opportunity initiatives, Hotel Mama Cuchara employs men and women of different ethnic groups and socio-economic backgrounds as well as people with disabilities. The hotel supports the Just Be hospitality program where team members with disabilities are employed in various hotel departments providing them with opportunities to pursue productive livelihoods.

Green Globe Certification Awarded to Atlantis by Giardino

Atlantis by Giardino

Green Globe recently awarded the Hotel Atlantis by Giardino its inaugural certification.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, October 31, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ —
Atlantis by Giardino is a 5-star urban retreat that combines the best of both worlds. Ten minutes from the city centre, the luxurious modern hotel with a Mediterranean feel has views of Zurich and the luxuriant Üetliberg mountain.

Green Globe recently awarded the Hotel Atlantis by Giardino its inaugural certification.

Volker Salentin, Purchasing Manager at the hotel said, ““It feels great to be part of the Green Globe community, and we are proud of our commitment to work more sustainably. Green Globe has guided us and helped us to work through the process of becoming a greener hotel. Given all the efforts we have already made, achieving Green Globe certification provides a specific framework that will sharpen our team’s focus and motivate us to keep on setting even more ambitious goals.”

Being so close to nature, the Swiss hotel is motivated to minimize its footprint in every possible way. In 2018, the property’s comprehensive waste management strategy included the collection of 15 different recyclable materials adding up to a recycling rate of 71%. In addition, before the end of this year, PVC bottles as a chief source of water for all employees will be phased out. Instead, staff members will be provided with reusable thermos bottles with additional water refilling fountains installed throughout the hotel. As a result, 12.000 PET water bottles per year will be diverted from landfill.

Atlantis by Giardino participates in the Too Good To Go food donation program. More than 2.3 million tons of food is thrown away in Switzerland alone annually. Too Good To Go works with hotels and other gastronomic outlets to combat food waste. Via a free app, food that would otherwise be discarded can be ordered by customers and picked up at a reduced cost. Over the past year, as a Too Good To Go member, the hotel has supported this worthy cause by offering affordable delicious foods and also contributes to the National Swiss Soup Day.

Nature is very much a part of daily life here. Chefs at Restaurant Ecco use local seasonal produce in tasty dishes and also try to incorporate as many herbs as possible that grow in the area surrounding the hotel. To encourage biodiversity in the region, surrounding grounds were planted with wildflowers after the renovation of the property was completed in 2015 while rainwater is captured for irrigating gardens.

OVK Bach Melharmony Festival

The festival also aims to also raise funds for Planet Symphony's Environmental initiatives

Don’t miss the Melharmony Festival on Nov 10th. It will be an experience to cherish. Maestro Ravikiran and I will take you to places you’ve never been before. See you there!”

— L Shankar inventor of Double Violin

MIDDLETON, WISCONSIN, UNITED STATES, October 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Twin Composer OVK-Bach Melharmony Festival in Madison, WI on Nov 9 & 10 will be a grand music and dance event, focusing on the inspired genius of Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi & Johann Sebastian Bach. While aimed to raise appreciation for these brilliant masters of melody and harmony from diverse parts of the world, the event organisers, Melharmony Foundation also intend to boost awareness regarding the climate crisis and raise funds for the Planet Symphony’s Climate Literacy & Action Drive (CLAD) project and ASHA’s educational initiatives for the underprivileged.

The mela will feature concerts, discussions and competitions devoted to the two 18th century giants it is named after. The jewel in the crown will be the coming together of the globally acclaimed virtuosos – L Shankar (10-string Double Violin) and Chitravina N Ravikiran (20-string slide) in a Melody, Harmony and Melharmony concert on Nov 10 (2 pm) at the Middleton Performing Arts Center, billed as “Lakshya – String Vision 2030”. They will be joined by Wisconsin Melharmonic Orchestra artists led by Ben Jaeger & Steve Kurr with percussionists Neel Agrawal and Vinod Seetharaman. "It has been fascinating to learn more about OVK and compare his accomplishments in the realm of Carnatic Music to J S Bach in Western Classical Art Music. While there are some differences between the musical traditions, there are many more similarities that connect us across cultures", said Steve Kurr.

Both Shankar and Ravikiran have transcended musical frontiers and collaborated with superstars of Eastern and Western classical and popular cultures. Shankar, whose performances have also been a part of superhit films and TV shows said, "Don’t miss the Melharmony Festival on Nov 10th. It will be an experience to cherish. Maestro Ravikiran and I will take you to places you’ve never been before. See you there!”

Ravikiran, who has collaborated with leading orchestras and initiated the Planet Symphony global environmental movement, said, "Performing with the iconic L Shankar is most exciting. This concert is even more special as we are not only battling climate crisis but also time. Therefore climate action needs cohesive intent and speed across the board."

Another premiere event with global appeal is the operatic dance drama “The Almighty Trinity” – literally colourful creation (with enchanting costumes) of Maestro Ravikiran, slated at 9.30 am on Sunday and performed by dozens of dancers led by Padmini Radhakrishnan (from India), Meenakshi Ganesan (WI), Preetha Sayeekrishna (GA) and Radhika Srivastava (CT).

The festival also offers opportunities for students of both Western and Indian traditions and is expected to draw talents and also listeners from across and outside the USA, like its previous editions. The opening day at Madison Memorial High School features Raman Iyer (Violin), Bhargavi Balasubramanian (Vocal), Radhakrishnan (Flute), Vijay Neelakanthan (Guitar), Sriram Natarajan, Ethirajan Ramanujan and Shankaran Bhattatiripad (mrdangam) and Balaji Chandran (ghatam/clay pot). They will team up with talented youngsters from all over the country. Students of Memorial High School will present a short performance.

This will be preceded by a short presentation on Bach by Ben Jaeger, Band Director of Memorial High School who said, "We are excited to welcome our whole community to access a Carnatic and Melharmony performance. For many families, this might be a completely new genre”.

”It is most rewarding to bring music and dance lovers of diverse cultures together through the works celebrating master composers like OVK and Bach, and support sustainable environmental initiatives", said Vanitha Suresh of the Melharmony Foundation and the ideator of the event. "Our team has no doubt that everyone will just love it! We recommend that you get tickets in advance at melharmonyfestival2019.brownpapertickets.com. I also thank Dane Arts and Arts Midwest, American Girl Fund for Children (AGFC) for supporting the event which includes 300 free festival passes for students including the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County (available upon email request. We also welcome large donations to the Melharmony Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit. Your support could mean water empowerment to impoverished communities."

The festival will culminate in a choral rendition of OVKs Saptaratnas (seven melodic masterpieces) followed by recognition of competition prize winners.

New technology empowers consumers to steer toward a Sustainable Future

Simply scan the PaperTale Smart Tag with your smartphone to enter the world of PaperTale

The founder of PaperTale, Bilal Bhatti, proudly showing the first ever product made with PaperTale Smart Tag, connected to the blockchain

As a proof of concept, PaperTale technology has been implemented in the fashion industry and has made a concept collection consisting of three garments for men and three for women

PaperTale makes it possible for consumers to scan a product with a smartphone and get information about the supply chain and the products environmental impact

MALMOE, SKANE LAN, SWEDEN, October 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — The new Swedish blockchain platform PaperTale makes it possible for consumers to simply scan a product with their smartphone and get authenticated information about the supply chain and the product’s environmental impact. The platform also shows information about the workers who made the product and confirms lawful salaries. Consumers are therefore given the power to make informed decisions about the things we buy, which could transform the consumption behavior and strengthen companies who work sustainably.
PaperTale launches a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, November 13th.

Consumer trust crisis
According to the study “2019 Edelman Trust Barometer Special Report: In Brands We Trust”, only 34% respond that they trust most of the brands they buy or use. The figure has dropped steadily from 2012 (47%) when the survey began.

Through advertising, news and other information, it becomes increasingly difficult to assess the truth in all claims made. Legislation and various forms of certifications have sought to force more sustainable production and reduced environmental impact. However, there are many indications that, for example, certifications often do not lead to any actual change, but are instead used as so-called "greenwashing". Consumers seem to rely less and less on the companies' claims, since there’s no way for consumers to verify that companies’ claims are correct. This is where PaperTale comes into the picture!

The Future is here
PaperTale AB is a Swedish company that has developed a technology which allows consumers to verify the claims made by companies. PaperTale enables traceability throughout the production process and has a built-in “Environmental Calculator” which shows the product's environmental impact, based on production methods and materials being used.

The platform shows basic information about the employees behind the products and confirms whether the workers received law abiding salaries and if they have written employment contracts. A large number of people in developing countries are working under slave-like conditions with wages below minimum wages and never gets the chance to receive education. "If we recognized and nourished the competence of the developing countries, we might have already visited Mars," says PaperTale's founder Bilal Bhatti.

With the PaperTale technology, there’s a possibility for the consumers to be interactive with the people who produce our products. The platform also gives consumers the opportunity to send tip to the workers or make contributions via crowdfunding of education to their children. Imagine having the opportunity to give a small tip to the person who made your favorite product.

With PaperTale's platform, every step in the production, i.e. material, source, work etcetera, is verified through the Blockchain. All transactions, such as donations or tip, can be tracked and ensured that it is transferred directly to the intended recipient.

PaperTale's "Proof of Concept"
After two years of developing PaperTale, the platform is ready to be presented to the world. As a Proof of Concept, PaperTale has implemented the technology in a textile factory in Pakistan, where all clothes are now manufactured with the new technology. The possibilities with the technology are almost endless and PaperTale wants to further develop the concept and in time implement additional features as well as for other industries.

PaperTale wants to show the world what the technology can accomplish and launches a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, starting on November 13th. Everyone who supports PaperTale on Kickstarter receives the first products ever produced with the new technology.

Take action and support PaperTale in the fight for true sustainability, environmental consideration and better working conditions!

Rocky Flats Disaster: Red Light for SRS Plutonium Bomb Plant (PBP) for Fabrication of “Pits” for Unneeded New Nuclear Weapon – Forum in Aiken, SC on November 12

Plutonium contamination left behind from pit production at Rocky Flats signals caution for a Plutonium Bomb Plant at SRS, where the focus must remain on clean-up and not bringing in more plutonium.”

— Tom Clements, Director, Savannah River Site Watch

AIKEN, SOUTH CAROLINA, USA, October 30, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — As it means more plutonium, more nuclear waste and more risk of nuclear accident at the U.S. Department of Energy's sprawling Savannah River Site in South Carolina, a public forum will be held at 7 p.m. on November 12, 2019 in the Aiken, South Carolina public library. The free event will address the risks of the Plutonium Bomb Plant (PBP) proposed for the site.

The forum will focus on lessons learned from pit production at DOE’s plutonium-contaminated and now-closed Rocky Flats site, located upwind from Denver, Colorado. Dr. LeRoy Moore and Patricia Mellen, Esq., representing the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, will discuss the plutonium contamination left at the site due to accidents and plutonium fires and give an update on the on-going efforts by a number of public interest groups to obtain grand jury documents sealed after a 1989 raid of the Rocky Flats site by the FBI.

The title of the forum is "Rocky Flats Disaster: Red Light for SRS Plutonium Bomb Plant." The message from the speakers is one of caution – that people in South Carolina do not want the risks of plutonium disasters like Rocky Flats to occur at SRS.

Tom Clements, director of Savannah River Site Watch (SRS Watch, will give an update on the pit production proposal of DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and review where things stand in Congress with the project, as of yet unauthorized and unfunded.

“NNSA has failed to show need for new pit production and has made no attempt to make a case that the old MOX building can be redesigned for the complex and dangerous pit mission,” said Tom Clements, director of the public interest group Savannah River Site Watch. “The plutonium contamination left behind from pit production at Rocky Flats should give great pause to acceptance of pit production at SRS, where the focus must remain on clean-up and not bringing in yet more plutonium and generating more nuclear waste,” added Clements. “No matter where you stand on the proposed Plutonium Bomb Plant, we encourage citizens of all viewpoints to join in the discussion, something NNSA has unfortunately not promoted.”

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has proposed expanding the production of plutonium pits, the core of nuclear weapons, to 80 or more per year at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico and at SRS. All of the new pits would be for a proposed and unneeded nuclear warhead, designated the W87-1, posing the risk of a new nuclear arms race with Russia.

At the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, NNSA has proposed converting the shuttered plutonium fuel (MOX) plant into a Plutonium Bomb Plant. But NNSA has made no case that the partially finished MOX plant, fraught with construction and design problems, can be converted to carry out the complex and dangerous pit mission. Production of pits at SRS, being pursued primarily to give the site work in the coming years, would result in yet more plutonium imported to SRS – on top of the 12 metric tons currently stored in the old K-Reactor – and yield hard-to-manage waste streams for on-site and off-site disposal. SRS has no experience making pits and plutonium production in dedicated nuclear reactors at the site was halted in the late 1980s.

At both November 12 events, SRS Watch will continue to call for an investigation into fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement during construction of the bungled MOX project, on which $8 billion was wasted. And, the demand will be made that the Rocky Flats grand jury documents must be released prior to any further talk of expanding pit production.

SRS Watch, Nuclear Watch New Mexico and Tri-Valley CAREs, all partners in the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA), along with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), have informed NNSA that failure to prepare a Programmatic Environmental Impact State (PEIS) on pit production is a violation of both the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and a court order on the pit issue. The groups are awaiting a response by NNSA to several letters on the legal requirement for the PEIS and are reviewing next action if NNSA chooses to keep ignoring the law.
