Devastating forest fires have ravaged the western United States. In just this year alone, according to numbers tallied by the National Interagency Fire Center, 87 large wildland fires have burned over 4.7 million acres in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

How can we stop these fires? The answer to that question is, “we can help slow them down or keep them from happening at all” simply by paying attention to the facts, not theory.

The United States has over 750 million acres of forest land. Over half of the forests are privately owned by large corporations such as Hancock Forestry Management, Weyerhaeuser, Sierra Pacific Industries and Rayonier Inc.

Most of these privately owned forests are certified and undergo annual inspections that verify responsible forest management practices are being followed. Sustainable forests in the USA are certified under programs such as the:
American Tree Farm System (ATFS)
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and
Sustainable Forestry Institute (SFI)

These programs develop healthy forest guidelines that are deeply rooted in science, ecology and principles of sustainability that create healthy forests by the removal of diseased and dead trees and by replanting new trees during all forest harvesting periods to ensure proper growth and ecological balance. So how come there are so many fires raging in the west and northwest right now? That is a question everyone is asking, especially politicians.

Sustainable Fuel Resources
Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels, LLC, (“NWABF”), is developing a Sustainable Aviation Fuel, (“SAF”), Project in Grays Harbor, WA. Shipments of this renewable jet fuel will begin in approximately 4 years. Delta Air Lines, buyer of the SAF, and many of the leading Timber Companies in the Northwest are involved in the NWABF Project. Our EPC, Black & Veatch, will design and engineer the entire Project.

NWABF plans to benefit the local Quinault Indian Nation tremendously. The Quinault Nation has agreed in principal to be a supplier of some of the woody biomass to the Project which would come from their forest residuals. This can increase the Nation’s revenues realized from the sale of forestry debris from their approximately 200,000 acres of forests near the Project. Their Forestry Management Company could help us manage our process. Since the Project will produce several hundreds of jobs during construction, the Quinault Indian Nation could benefit with replacement jobs after their sawmill closed and enjoy economic gain.

The NWABF project provides a fantastic resource for the disposition of forest debris, treetops, dead fallen trees, sawdust, etc., all of which are a byproduct of the environment or the local timber industry! We are a blessing to these Timber Companies, as they cannot bury wood to get rid of it and burning the residuals has been banned in most states of the United States. Harmful gases are emitted from pulp and dead wood on the ground. This practice is terribly bad for the environment. Also, it provides a perfect “kindling” for fires! When lightning strikes, it is sitting there ready to burn.

When a tree dies and falls over, it blocks throughways for tree thinning, it rots and creates a fire hazard, animal habitats are harmed or destroyed, and most importantly the water table is affected (a huge problem in states like AZ). Fallen wood keeps the rainfall from penetrating the ground and entering the water table which, I have learned from lobbyists in AZ.

What about Forestry Management?
Maybe if we look at the Forestry Management practices in these states that are having all these fires, we can find out the true facts about some of the causes of a lot of these fires. We should also look at the Federal Government (which owns huge amounts of forest acreage). There are $millions of federal dollars spent on maintaining the forests and a lot of this money goes to the states for “Maintenance and Forestry Management”. How well do they do in Forestry Management?

As we are all aware, there are agencies and organizations that try to prevent any and all tree removal. They even try to object to removing dead and fallen trees. And they claim our industry “cuts down entire forests of trees to provide feedstock for biomass gasifiers”. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Reforestation for the Future

We take the Timber Industry’s leftovers, their ‘scraps’ as we know it. And, with proper Forestry Management, these trees all get replanted. This practice is called REFORESTATION! It is an industry term! What we want to know, is do they get replanted by States that remove dead trees, slash, beetle kill, treetops, bark, etc.? Answer: Not if the State won’t allow their removal in the first place!

There is no environmental benefit to slash and dead trees lying on the ground rotting and going into the ground. On the contrary, it can be very harmful to the environment, which is all verifiable. The NARA Report, a study conducted a few years ago that took 4 years to complete and cost $40 million, managed by Washington State University and Director Michael Wolcott, PhD and Regents Professor, verifies the voluminous amount of wood annually that is available for removal in the Northwest and it’s a lot more than we need for our Project.

What Can We Do?
I think we can all agree, “Global Warming” does have a long-term effect on the planet. That EFFECT has taken place over hundreds of years, not during just one term, in my opinion, of one President or another. Do not blame the former or past administrations. Fix it now, I say! The actual effects on the forests from Climate Change or Global Warming are not really quantified and opinion on this matter runs rampantly differently from expert to expert. Let us just deal with the facts we can verify.

Therefore, I would challenge everyone who reads this to consider all the issues causing these horribly catastrophic forest fires. The reason? We all have many friends evacuating or losing their homes, losing a way of life that used to be precious to them and the wildlife where this is happening. People are losing jobs, etc. We can do something about a large portion of the cause of these terribly devastating fires. We must deal with the dead or diseased trees, slash from Timber operations, treetops, bark, sawdust, etc.

We cannot stop lighting strikes and we will never stop some less than intelligent campers from not putting out their campfires or smoking in the forests, etc.

We can clear our forests and manage them better. When lighting does strike, hopefully our brave Hotshots and Smokejumpers who put their lives on the line will have a fighting chance to get through the forests and to the source of the problem, clearing fire breaks, getting relief to people, saving animals. Then maybe finally, they can achieve containment and prevent loss of life and more property! Do you know any firefighters who fight forest fires? Some of the best people there are!

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, September 29, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Preventing Future Pandemics Act would end the import, export, and sales of certain live wildlife for the primary purpose of human consumption in the U.S. and implement dedicated strategies to address the problem worldwide.

The Humane Society Legislative Fund commends U.S. Senators John Cornyn, R-Tex., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., and U.S. Representatives Mike Quigley, D-Ill., and Fred Upton, R-Mich., for introducing the Preventing Future Pandemics Act. This legislation would protect Americans and people around the world from the continued emergence of devastating zoonotic diseases from risky wildlife management practices by eliminating cruel and unsafe live wildlife markets here at home and positioning the U.S. as a global leader to end the trade of live wildlife for human consumption.

The overarching lesson of COVID-19 is that we can no longer allow inhumane and high-risk interactions between humans and wild animals. COVID-19 has wreaked extreme havoc—killing over a million people to-date, sickening millions more, and triggering an economic crisis—all of which will be felt for years to come. The wildlife trade and live wildlife markets like the ones linked to COVID-19, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and other disease outbreaks create a human health hazard and an animal welfare nightmare.

“In the United States and abroad, wildlife markets are filthy, crowded places filled with sick, injured and frightened animals. Without a permanent ban on live wildlife trade for human consumption and strict enforcement put in place, the development and spread of deadly zoonotic diseases is likely to occur again.

KINSHASA, THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, September 29, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — SkyPower, a global developer and operator of utility scale solar projects, and a recognized leader and advocate for sustainability, together with the Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNEL), the national energy of The Democratic Republic of the Congo, today announced the signing of a landmark power purchase agreement for 1000 MW, under the framework of a SkyPower Green Giant PPP (Public Private Partnership).

This agreement, one of the first of its kind in the DRC, represents a significant milestone in President Félix Tshisekedi’s vision and strategy, focused on increasing the production of clean and renewable energy in an effort to boost electrification rate (to approximately 30% over the next decade) using clean energy as a proven catalyst for substantial job creation and economic development. This is expected to result in an estimated USD$2.3 Billion in stimulus to DRC’s GDP, and the creation of approximately 30,000 job years.

The DRC Green Giant project further demonstrates President Tshisekedi's commitment to climate action. It contributes to the global push towards DRC's commitments to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. "DRC's growing population is one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa. With such strong growth, the need for infrastructure, education, health, and social services will increase, and energy access is critical to achieving these needs. Minister of Finance, José Sele Yalaghuli described, “DRC Green Giant as a project through a PPP with SkyPower, designed to provide an estimated USD$2.3 billion contribution to the country’s GDP, an accelerator for the creation of new jobs, and will serve as an example for other FDIs seeking to invest in the historic infrastructure development of the DRC.”

As the novel Coronavirus pandemic has spread across the globe, we’ve also experienced a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season that has brought widespread storm damage to the Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, the Western states of California, Oregon, and Washington have been blanketed with acrid smoke as massive wildfire conflagrations have burned out of control.

These unprecedented weather events are taking place at a time when the world’s average temperature has increased by 1°C since the start of the industrial revolution.

Given that climate scientists believe we are on track to double or triple this temperature increase within the lifetime of today’s youngest generations, it’s sobering to imagine the potential ecological destruction and misery we may suffer in the future unless we take drastic action to control greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions now.

Corporate America is beginning to take action.

According to one of the leading environmental consulting companies, Natural Capital Partners, nearly 25% of Fortune Global 500 companies have made a commitment to reduce their net greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2030.

The number of major companies that have publicly committed to achieving this “carbon neutral” status is growing – from around 100 in 2019 to more than 200 today.

And the list keeps growing.

For example, Formaspace clients Ford Motor Company and Google have both recently announced plans to become carbon neutral. Apple, during its recent product introductions, pointed out that its new iPad Air will be carbon neutral, joining Microsoft, which previously announced its ambitious plans to go even further — to go “carbon negative” (e.g. remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces).

Meanwhile, Tesla, which is building a new electric truck manufacturing facility in Austin, has pledged carbon neutrality for its giant “Gigafactory” battery manufacturing operations, and oil and gas producer BP has recently committed to aggressive plans to reduce its carbon footprint.

How quickly will other manufacturers jump on the carbon-neutral bandwagon?

There are signs that we may soon reach a tipping point.

Leading-edge companies have already demonstrated it’s possible to go carbon neutral using today’s technology, and many have saved significant money on energy costs as a result.

Adding to the pressure, more consumers are making their purchasing decisions based on the environmental stance of companies they do business with. The same goes for business-to-business (B2B) transactions: as more and more companies pursue a carbon-neutral agenda, they are strongly motivated to purchase goods and services from other companies pursuing the same goals, to reduce the carbon footprint across their collective supply chains.

Finally, finance and government regulations are adding additional pressure on companies to make the switch toward carbon-neutral programs. Institutional investors are using the power of “investor activism” to encourage policies that are friendlier to the environment. In Europe, the EU has set forth a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050, and the state of California has announced its ambitious plans to be carbon neutral by 2045.

Conduct A Carbon Audit And Track Your Carbon Emissions “Budget”

What steps can your manufacturing company take today to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve the goal of becoming carbon neutral?

As with any other business initiative, the first step is to create an accurate baseline measurement of the “before” state, so you’ll have a wide-ranging understanding of exactly where you need to improve.

Tracking the monthly electric utility bill is no longer sufficient; instead, you will need to invest in new meters, sensors, and other devices to get a true understanding of every aspect of your current energy usage — as well as to accurately quantify any greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere during your production processes.

In addition to these so-called “direct emissions,” you will also need to identify and measure “indirect emissions” (such as those created by the power plant supplying electricity to the grid) as well as “indirect value chain emissions,” which span the gamut from the carbon emissions created by vendors supplying your raw materials to your customers who buy and use your products.

Keeping track of all this energy usage data is complicated, so don’t reinvent the wheel by trying to create a framework formula from scratch.

Instead, focus your efforts on collecting the data by leveraging one of the several environmental management system (EMS) frameworks adopted by other companies.

Popular EMS frameworks include the pioneering system developed by Natural Capital Partners back in 2002, the ISO 14000/14001 series of energy standards, as well as two standards developed in Europe: the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and PAS 2060 from the British Standards Institution (BSI Group).

Most of the organizations offering environmental management system (EMS) frameworks are also in the business of offering carbon-neutral “certifications” once you meet your carbon-neutral goals.

Tip: Before you select an EMS framework, perform due diligence to determine which of the available certifications are the most well-regarded in your industry sector and make your final EMS selection based on that criteria. Once you commit to a specific EMS implementation, it stands to reason it will be far easier to get a “carbon neutral” certification from the same organization.

Change Up Energy Sources Powering Manufacturing Processes To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

When it comes to manufacturing companies, production processes tend to use the most energy, unlike other businesses, where heating and cooling buildings are typically the greatest energy users.

That’s why switching to renewable energy sources to power your production lines can have an outsized impact on reducing carbon emissions.

And there are a lot more environmentally friendly options available today. In many markets, you can choose electricity providers that use solar, wind, or other renewable energy sources. This can be supplemented with on-site power generation using solar arrays or wind turbines.

Not all manufacturing operations can be converted to renewable energy, however. Energy-intensive processes (such as blast furnaces used by metal manufacturing companies) may need to use fossil fuel-based power for the foreseeable future.

In these cases, adding an energy co-generation system makes sense. Co-generation systems can absorb any excess heat (which would otherwise go to waste) and use it for another purpose, such as generating steam to heat buildings, or powering other manufacturing processes, thus reducing the overall energy usage.

A Case For Energy Grid Micromanagement

Industrial power customers who are used to paying for cheap power during off-peak hours (such as at night) will need to rethink their approach to energy use management.

This is because wind and solar production peaks during the daylight hours, providing a surplus of available power during the middle of the day.

(This also means you may be able to negotiate with your utility company get the cheapest, cleanest electricity during the middle of the day.)

Electric grid operators describe this new phenomenon as the “duck curve” – a name given to the shape of the curve that results when you calculate the difference between consumer demand for electricity (which peaks in the early morning and again in the late afternoon) and the available supply of solar and wind energy (which peaks during the middle of the day).

Balancing between these two curves is tricky for grid operators. Without large scale energy storage systems, most grid operators need to be ready to “dispatch” power plants (typically powered by fossil fuels) very quickly, especially during the late afternoon demand peak, then throughout the night and into the morning peak period, after which, the solar and wind supplies become available again.

Suffice to say that managing the balance between these ever-changing supply and demand curves is a major challenge for grid operators (as well as manufacturing companies operating their own on-site solar or wind generation systems) – making it a task that is well suited for automated computer systems.

Sensing an emerging need, Google has created a new AI-based system (using its Deep Mind machine learning technology) that is capable of making micro-adjustments throughout the day to optimize energy. The new system was initially developed for Google’s own energy-intensive data centers, but the company has announced it intends to sell these AI-based energy management systems to other industrial users as well.
