FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (September 2, 2026) – The Cape Cod Commission has launched a new online survey asking residents and visitors to share their thoughts about open space as part of the development of the Cape Cod Regional Open Space Plan.

Protecting open space and natural resources is a key regional goal identified in the 2025 Cape Cod Regional Policy Plan (RPP). The Commission is developing a Regional Open Space Plan to outline a path forward for conservation, ensuring the continued health of the region’s natural systems, economy, and population. The plan will support local open space efforts and align with regional objectives.

The plan will help identify and prioritize the lands most important for conservation, community values, and long-term resilience. It will also focus on improving connections between open spaces to create a more cohesive regional network. As part of this effort, the Commission will collect and analyze data, develop open space profiles for Barnstable County and all fifteen Cape Cod towns, map undeveloped and unprotected lands, and examine the economic value of open space.

The plan will build on previous local and regional efforts, including municipal open space and recreation plans and land trust prioritization strategies. It will align with Massachusetts’ Biodiversity Conservation Goals, which emphasize land protection, habitat restoration, sustainable food systems, and stronger connections between people and the natural environment.

Public input is a critical component of the planning process. By taking just a few minutes to complete the online survey, residents and visitors can help inform how open spaces are protected, improved, and enjoyed for generations to come. Feedback from the survey will help the Commission understand community priorities and ensure the plan reflects a wide range of perspectives. After completing the survey, respondents can use an interactive map to highlight their favorite open spaces and contribute further to the planning process.
