Wake County Conservation Poster Contest opens to local students
Wake County’s youngest conservationists are invited to pick up their paintbrushes, markers and pencils and get creative for this year’s “Soil and Water: Yours for Life” Conservation Poster Contest.
This year’s theme asks students to show why healthy soil and water are important and how we can protect them by reducing erosion and using sustainable farming practices.
“Our students are the next generation of conservationists,” said Wake County Commissioner Susan Evans. “This contest is a fun way for them to learn about the importance of soil and water and share their ideas about how we can protect these valuable resources.”
The contest is open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in Wake County, whether they attend public, private, charter or home school, or participate through youth clubs.
The contest will begin with class registration, which is open through Oct. 9, 2026. Once posters are finished, teachers will select the top entry from each class and coordinate with Wake Soil and Water Conservation District staff for pickup by Oct. 23, 2026. The Wake SWCD Board of Supervisors will judge the entries on Nov. 4, 2026. Winning posters will advance to regional and state contests in spring 2027.
Prizes will be awarded at every level of the competition:
- District: First-place winners earn $75, and second-place winners earn $50.
- Regional: First-place winners receive $100.
- State: First-place winners receive $200, and second-place winners receive $100.
Every student who submits a poster will receive a ribbon for participation.
