Public Comment Invited on Route 1 and Southpoint Parkway Project Environmental Assessment

FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 16, to share information and receive comments on an Environmental Assessment for the proposed Route 1 and Southpoint Parkway project in Spotsylvania County.
VDOT, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is conducting an Environmental Assessment in compliance with the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to evaluate potential improvements to the transportation network in and around the Route 1 and Southpoint Parkway intersection.
The Environmental Assessment evaluated the effects of the potential quadrant roadway design on environmental, cultural and community resources in the study area.
The in-person meeting will be held in an open-house format for the public to review displays and materials and discuss questions with project representatives.

Public hearing materials, including informational boards, a video, and a brochure are available now on the project website.
The public is encouraged to provide input in one of several ways:
- Complete an online survey
- Provide comments orally or in writing at the public hearing
- Submit comments by email to fred.comments@vdot.virginia.gov
- Submit comments by mail to VDOT Project Manager Heather Staton, Virginia Department of Transportation, 9120 Lockwood Boulevard, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
All comments received by Sept. 28, 2026, will be included in the public record for this public involvement process.
Proposed project design plans are not yet available. Additional public meetings and opportunities to submit public comments will be provided as the project advances.
