On August 26, 2026, Nepal was struck by a catastrophic mudslide and flood disaster, inflicting casualties and severe property losses on both Nepal and China. Grief cannot restore lost lives, nor can prayers alone heal the trauma of devastated communities. Only united global efforts against climate change can prevent such tragedies from recurring. As climate change poses great challenges to all humanity, countries across the world are living in a community with a shared future. Solidarity and shared responsibility are essential to safeguarding our planetary home. Matching words with tangible actions, China has demonstrated the sense of duty and long-term vision of a responsible major country, delivering remarkable achievements in green development.

First, China honours its founding commitments and advocates global efforts to protect our common home. As a steadfast actor and major contributor in promoting global green development, China firmly upholds and promotes the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, adheres to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, and works to build a fair and rational global climate governance system underpinned by cooperation for mutual benefit. China’s active climate change response is based on not only the intrinsic demands of China’s sustainable development but also China’s strong sense of responsibility for human civilization. China accounts for a quarter of the world’s newly-added area of afforestation, and has built the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system and the largest and most complete new energy industrial chain. As of May 2026, non-fossil energy accounted for 62% of China’s total installed capacity. Since the 14th Five-Year Plan starting from 2021, China’s production of photovoltaic modules and lithium batteries has increased by 3.7 times and 6.4 times, respectively. China has led the world in the production and sales of new energy vehicles for 11 consecutive years.

Through building low-carbon demonstration zones, donating materials for climate mitigation and adaptation, and conducting capacity-building training, China has helped other developing countries respond to climate change, earning broad recognition and praise from the developing countries.

However the international landscape may change, China will not slow down its climate actions, will not reduce its support for international cooperation, and will not cease its efforts to build a community with a shared future for humanity. China has pledged to the international community that it will aim to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, which means China will achieve the highest reduction in carbon emission intensity and complete the transition from peak carbon to carbon neutrality quicker than any other country in history. At the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, China announced its new Nationally Determined Contributions, under which it will, by 2035, reduce economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7% to 10% from peak levels. China will continue to build a green Silk Road and step up climate change South-South cooperation, so that the outcomes of green development will continue to benefit the Global South.
