Sustainment Leaders Seminar Strengthens Senior Enlisted Leader Development

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. — Senior enlisted leaders from across the Army sustainment enterprise completed the virtual Sustainment Leaders Seminar (SLS) Aug. 24-28. The SLS is a five-day professional development course focused on strategic leadership, mentorship and enterprise-level sustainment.
Alongside Command Sgt. Maj. T.J. Skelton from Army Sustainment University, and a team of mentors and guest speakers, this seminar was developed to provide sustainment’s sergeants major a deliberate opportunity to broaden their perspective, strengthen their ability to advise senior leaders and build professional connections across the enterprise. The seminar included instruction and discussion on leading multi-functional sustainment formations, executive and strategic communication, leveraging technology, and understanding joint and multinational partnerships.
This new curriculum is designed to help senior enlisted leaders think beyond their current formations and better understand their role as advisors, mentors and leaders operating in increasingly complex environments. Just as important, the seminar created space for mentorship and professional dialogue among senior leaders with deep operational experience across the sustainment community.
“The value of this seminar is not just in the curriculum,” Skelton said. “It is in the dialogue, the shared experience and the opportunity for senior sustainment leaders to learn from one another in a way that strengthens the entire enterprise.”
This year’s seminar saw updated curriculum better reflecting current operational demands and emerging challenges, and based off the knowledge, skills, and attributes expected of a nominative-level sergeant major or command sergeant major. In updating the curriculum, the community thanked those who started this journey, because if they had not built the foundation for this course, this educational opportunity would not exist. Participants who completed the seminar earned a professional development skill identifier of S1C, and certificate of completion, recognizing the course as both a professional development milestone and a formal investment in senior enlisted sustainment leadership.
Additionally, a team from the Army Sustainment University evaluated the seminar for transition next year to its educational umbrella, a move that helps formalize the course as a repeatable part of senior sustainment leader development.

As the Army continues to transform for future operations, the Sustainment Leader Seminar remains an important forum for preparing senior enlisted leaders to think strategically, communicate effectively and help shape the future of Army sustainment.
