One in Four SC Students is Chronically Absent. Be Present S.C. Summit Helped Schools See How Climate Plays a Role
COLUMBIA, S.C. – "Data shows school climate matters even more now [to attendance] than before the pandemic," said UChicago Consortium on School Research Executive Director Dr. Elaine Allensworth at the Be Present S.C. summit.
The S.C. Education Oversight Committee (EOC) in partnership with the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) hosted Be Present S.C.: Building a Culture of Showing Up on Friday, Oct. 30. School officials from 29 districts attended the event.
The summit revealed how school climate impacts student attendance. Dr. Allensworth shared findings from the Consortium’s study Connection, Trust, and Learning - Student Attendance in the Middle and High School Grades Following the COVID-19 Pandemic.
"We see that school climate really matters - such as student-peer relationships, connectedness with the school, whether students feel like they belong and their relationships with teachers," said Dr. Allensworth before discussing strategies that could help impact those factors.
Data showed middle and high school climate drivers were strong teacher-parent relationships, peer relationships, school connectedness, and students feeling that their teachers challenged them academically.
The S.C. Education Oversight Committee provided schools in attendance with a report on their climate survey results and attendance data. After reviewing, schools developed strategies to improve attendance.
Attendees also learned about the S.C. Education Oversight Committee’s Be Present S.C. initiative, which partners with schools to encourage excellent attendance by offering tool kits and resources.
